Butter Fat Competition.

(To the Editor ) Siu, -la your iasuo of ibo 15lfa toll* I noto tb© dairy eomt»ls{®e A end P. Aasociatlon.biui -wisely provided for revising the recemmendaliom which have boon nub mi ttod in ouunection with the proposed competition. The suggestion that twenty.five point* be awarded for each pound of butter fat, and ono point for cacti pound of milk, Boom# to require reconsideration. For in«tnnco, a cow may yield twenty, five pouuds of four per cent, milk, and, when the battor fat m removed, there 1 are but twenty-Jtour pounds of separated milk lefi, worth about threo haffpoiioe, whereae the butter fat value is ninepcnco; yet, under the proposed conditions, twenty-five point® will bo awarded | for cach. *" i The meaoifign of the terms ' breed,' ' cross/ and 4 grade ' arc not specified. Satisfactory definitions, to my mind, may read as follows in thin connection (1.) Breed refers to animals recogniscd as purebred by Breeders' Associations and whoso sires and dams arts either registered or eligibto for registration by such Associations. (2.) A crossbrcd boast is ono who«o sire i» porebred and of a different breed irora its dam, which its also purebred. •(8.) A grade cow is ono whose sire ia

purebred and tho dam is dot. If the«o renderings aco satisfactory to tho Association then, aft ia right, all cattle will bo excluded from the competition except those by sires which tho owners describe &b purebred. Until tho aire must bo registered also by a Breed Association it is surely a waste of money to give tbo larger prizes. The object of giving the greater inducements is not : only to draw exhibits, but to got them i with certified breeding at least on otic side, to promote the forming of Breeders' Associations, to encourage owners to breed and farmers to buy better bulla, and to lead all owners of dairy cattle to test their cowa for butter fat. Though the proposal to have all competing cattle under tho Association's care for ten daye haß much to recommend It 1 doubt whether it will give the beat : rcauitß, but will hope for large entries and a uucccKsful event. —I aui, etc., A.
