A Great Roadway.
(By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Per Press Association.) Received May 22, at 9.20 a.m. NEW YORK, May 21: A Bill lias been introduced into Congress preparatorj' to the construction of a boulevard 3300 miles in length. It will be after the fashion of the Appian Way, and will stretch from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast, partly utilising the ancient Washington-St. Louis post road. It is hoped the road will facilitate automobile touring. The Appian Way was the oldest of the famous Roman roads, leading from the Porta G'apena at Rome southward to Capua, and named after Appius Claudius Cojcus, who was Censor in, 313 B.C. It was afterwards extended to Brundusium. Remains of it may still be seen. The engineering difficulties, which were great, were successfully overcome. The roadway consisted of a foundation and several carefully-cemented strata topped with a jointed pavement.
