Manawatu Championships.
Senior Matches.
[By Faik Try.]
The weather on Saturday was most disagreeable for football. Rain, accompanied by a high westerly wind, fell incessantly throughout the afternoon, and, consequently, the expectations oi interesting and scientific games were not realised, although, however, the contests were stubbornly fought, and wero very fast at times, especially when the condition of the grounds was taken into consideration. On No. 1 ground Palmerston, with a very strong combination, defeated Old Boys (the champions of late years) by 8 points to 0. Feilding were matched against Institute on No. 2 ground, and after an exceedingly fast and hard-fought game, the former carried off the honouris by 11 to 3. The- result of the Palmerston-Old Boys match came as a great surprise, but the Feilding-Institute fixture was in a sense a foregone conclusion, although it was not anticipated that the difference in the scores would be so marked, which, however, does not thoroughly indicate the state of the game. The greasy nature of the ball, in conjunction with the high wind blowing down tho field, made the leather difficult to effectively handle, and when playing against the wind the physical condition of players was severely taxed. There was a very fair muster of spectators present, each match claiming about an equal number of supporters.
