New Zealand Exhibition.
Meeting of the Local Committee.
The local Exhibition Committee met at the Borough Council Chambers last evening. The president, Mr J. Nash, occupied the chair. There were also present Messrs M. Cohen, J. C. Lane, B. Holben, P. C. Freetli, W. Beck, J. M. Johnston, M. Moller, E. O. Hurley, A. Jack, A. Seifert, and L. Simmons. In his opening remarks the Chairman pointed out that the executive had now some definite plan to lay before the meeting, having gone exhaustively into the scheme for the proposed Manawatu Court at the Exhibition. As the time for the fixture was rapidly approaching he hoped that final arrangements would soon be completed. The executive's scheme was then laid before the meeting, but it was though advisable not to make it public just at present. Mr A. Jack said ho did not think much could be done with the JG2OO the committee had in hand, and estimated that the cost would be more like JGIOOO. He complained that something more tangible had not been placed before them, more particularly as to space and expense.
Mr Hurley pointed out that the executive had apparently overlooked several details of importance. He urged, however, that they should get on with the business.
Mr Cohen spoke on the groat desirability of making the district exhibit as unique and representative as possible. They did not want to have it stereotyped —this should not be forgotten. He also thought that more money would be required, and believed that to attain the object they would have to appeal to individual members of the community. He had no fear, however, that a good response would not be made. The committee's recommendations were then adopted. Mr Seifert undertook to enlist the sympathy of t'ie various flaxmillers in the district in the project to have a good show of flax. He was given charge of this division. was also decided, on the chairman's proposition, " that Mr Johnston be in charge of the wool exhibit; Messrs .Holben, Johnston, and Lane be in charge of the butter exhibit; and that Mr Moller be in charge of the timber exhibit." Prior _to the motion being put, Mr Jack objected to Mr Holben being on the butter committee, on the grounds that he was an interested party. Mr Holben offered to withdraw, but after some discussion the motion was carried as it stood, it being pointed out that his assistance would be invaluable to the other members.
The matter of again waiting on local bodies which had refused to grant subsidies was left in the hands of Messrs Hurley and Jack. It was decided, on Mr Johnston's proposition, to invite applications for space from district exhibitors at 2s per foot. Mr D. McPherson was appointed canvasser. Messrs Hay don, H. M. Simmonds, MeHardy, and Pringle (with power to add to their number) were appointed a committee to make a personal canvass of the borough and district for subscriptions. Pi>eplying to the Chairman, Mr Johnston said he did not think that the A. and P. Association could grant a donation to the funds as they already promised to help to send stock to the show.
The meeting then terminated,
