" Australia tor the Australians "

Mr Beakin's Policy. (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Per Press Association). SYDNEY, May 18. Mr Deakin, the Prime Minister, addressed a large meeting in the Town Hall. He enunciated an elaborate policy, the basis of which was " Australia for the Australians." Replying to criticisms that industrial legislation should come first, he said this was impossible. To legislate industrially lay with the States and not the Commonwealth. Protection must come first. This would not prevent seeking closer nnion with the Mother Country, as at present there was not much prospect of any arrangement with the Mother Country, but he was in communication with South Africa and Canada, and they were turning towards Australia. Although Mr Seddon had said there was not much prospect of falling into line with Australia, the matter would be looked into in a few days. Received May 19, at 9.47 a.m. SYDNEY, May 19. Mr Deakin announced that the Navigation Anti-Tr,iistßill and a measure to federalise Old Age Pensions would be introduced next session. The last named Bill and the demand of the States for the Braddon clause would make the necessity for a Federal land tax inescapable.
