STREET IMPROVEMENTS.

The proposal enunciated by the Mayor on Thursday night to commence the new road construction scheme on Main street west, from the railway station to the square, will commend itself to ratepayers. Irrespective of it being the main thoroughfare to the square, the street is badly formed, and probably the dirtiest in town. First impressions are lasting, and when the street is completed under the new conditions, we have no doubt it will contirm visitors in the general idea of the stability and prosperity of Palmerston North. It is also proposed to place an extra footpath on the southern side of Main street from the Commercial Hotel corner to the railway station. The idea is an excellent one. The new footway will greatly relieve the congested traffic on the existing

path, along which locomotion becomes most difficult when railway passengers add their numbers to the usual stream of pedestrians, and the public cannot fail to appreciate the improvements to be effected.
