Butter Fat Tost
(To the Editor.) Slit,-In your issue of t'.e 15th inst. appears the report of the nub-committee appointed to report to the A. and P. Society on tho competition re the above. 1 coiigratulalo them on tho complete form presented to the Committee. Yet on examining the condition seriatim there are some details which seem to me to require revision or addition. The points I wish to deal with are three—(a) points allotted, (1) weight and (2) test; (b) dates of taking 4 days' testa ; (c) time U exhibition at Show.
The first sa) is tho most complicated and f will deal last with that. As to (b) I strongly recommcnd tho 6th and 9th days inclusive and give one or more cows a chanea to recover from an off da}-, which is bound to appear anions 15 or 20 cows at that season and give those cows tho 10th day'n tost instead of that on which their results are not normal. In (e) I would urge that only one day be compulsory for exhibition, let it be either tho second or third, as two successive days would certainly be detrimental to the cows. Now to the vexed question in (n). if a butter test, then the points allocated do not show the best cow, I will give three instances to prove this. Suppose there are fix cows in groups of two for comparison. No. 1 gives 171bs milk and 7 test, and thus gains 102 points. No. 2 gives -lOlbs milk and <5 test, and gains 11)0 points. Now in butter fat this is reversed, for No 2 gives 2 - 4lbs buttei fat audNo. 1 only l'lOlbs butter fat. In 2nd group No. 1 gives 2Blbs milk 5 test, 150 points ; No. 2 gives 35lbs milk 4 test, 135 points. In butter fat these cows are exactly equal, viz., r4lbs. In 3rd group No. 1 gives 281bs 4 test, 128 points ; No. 2 gives 351bs 3A test, points. In butter fat No. 1 yields only i'l2lbs t while No. 2 yields l*'i2slbs. In conclusion let me say this is not intended for a controversy, but its importance is worth notiog. I earnestly hope the society will evolve a scheme that will actually produce the best ctw and tend to evoke what our district wants, an awakening to the fact that there is n vast lield for improving tho class of dairy stock. The idea of the registered sire would have been to my mind the better way to start.—l am, etc., Puooni-ss.
