A contemporary complains that rough play lias started with the season at Otaki, several casualties occurring during the Otaki-Tainui match. In the interests of the game referees will have to put down this sort of thing. In the Levin-Wanderer match Referee Hankins very promptly warned any player who had a tendency to play rough, and he had the players well under control. The half-back seized the ball and made a superb rush down the field. The crowd went wild, but when the cheers of applause had subsided it was
apparent that the ball had not been "in play." "Oh, dear, what does he have to bring the ball back for?" asked one lady of another. "I'm sure I don't know," was the reply, "unless he's got an encore."
