Bambaata's Rebellion

Five hundred rebels followed the column, but were repelled, losing five. Colonel McKenzie shelled Sigandi's chief kraal across a precipitous donga and dense bush. LONDON, May 16. Mr E. G. Jellicoe applied to Bow Street for process on two informations against Colonel Sir H. E. McCallum, Commander-in-Chief of Natal—one by F. Colenso —for acts of oppression in Natal, involving an illegal proclamation of martial law, and the homicide of fourteen natives. It was decided to hear the application in private and a shorthand writer was refused admission. Mr Jellicoe announced that the application under these circumstances would be withdrawn. Received May 17, at 8.54 a.m. PIETERMARITZBURG, May 16. The rebels are incensed against Bambaata and the witch doctors. The women are wailing nightly in the bush over their dead.
