Apiti.

(Prom Our Own Correspondent)

A meeting of ratepayers was held in the Oddfellows' Hall on Saturday night. Mr J. S. Gruy occupied the chair. The object of the meeting was to protest against the high valuations placed on the land by the Government "Valuer. Several speakers strongly protested against their valuations, which had been raised considerably since last valuation. It wan resolved that all present send in their objections, and that the chairman write the Valuer-General, asking him to visit the district and readjust the valuations. The annual general meeting of the Farmers' Union was held on Saturday night. There was a fair attendance. Mr Guy was elected chairman of the branch and Mr Elliott secretary. I understand it is the aim of the new chairman to try and infuse some enthusiasm into their meetings by having discussions on various topics relating to farming, and also by getting members to contribute papers. The rainfall for last month was 7.630 inches, making a total of 25.5 inches for the four months of the year. A young man named Selby met with a bad accident while engaged on the bridge over the Coal Creek on the Norsewood road. He fell from the top of the structure, a distance of about 30 feet. I understand the sufferer is progressing favourably.
