Japan's War Losses.
Some extremely interesting antl important returns have been lately issued by the Japanese War Ofiiee. They certainly deserve to be wide!}' circulated and pondered over, says the '• Speaker," for they give a clear idea o£ the numbers which a successful modern arm}' may expect to lose in a hard-fought campaign. At the etid of the war it was generally understood that the Japanese hospital arrangements ana ambulance system hud been so perfect that the losses by sickness had been comparatively small. It is now oliicially announced thai disease, as usual, claimed more victims than batik', though Ihe excess is very small, very much smaller that usual. I lore are i he stal islies u; killed, wounded and missing : — Killed on the held ... •1:5,210 Wounded on the held ... 15y.07:» Missing ... ... ... 5,081 Injured by accident ... 10,1155 Total., 218,129 During the war the Japanese War Office did not publish lists with names of killed and wounded, and such statistics as it did issue commanded littlo confidence. Even now the London journal considers the tale of casualities to be suspiciously small. Probably most of the missing should be added to the dead. Among "injured by accident" arc included those who were bitten by horses, run over by carts, maimed by badty-lhting boots and hurt by falling over clilLs. To the total of killed, wounded, injured and missing must be added 521,1.30 who died of or were invalided by disease and sickness, thus giving a grand total of -Ul'J.oGu casualties. It appears from a careful analysis of the returns that 281,587 invalided men were brought back to Japan. The total number of men who perished at the front is put at about 60,000. Of tho invalided mon who were sent into hospitals in Japan, 137,G10 recovered and were discharged, and 3601 died in hospital.
