Meeting of Council.
A meeting- of the Council of tbe Chamber of Commerce was held last night, the President, Mr Hurley, presiding. . •■•.■ ■~..".■■.■
A petition was reoeived from about two hundred farmers ond drovers, iriterestedin stools.in and around Palmerston, requesting that, the Chamber; should use its influence 'with , the Minister, of Bailways in Having the railway line fenced from VogeUstreet to.Terrace-street. The grounds / of the. application was the damage to .stock owing to the level crossing being so short a distance from where the train showed in iight. The petition was referred to the annual meeting
The Auckland Chamber of Commerce, wrote, forwarding a copy of a resolution passed • by ; ; it, ■ relative .to the Trades Monopolies Bill which was described as q'cTdrastio that it called for every effort being put forward to prevent it becom? ing law. Thp ' resolution ' was, inter alia, to the effeot that the conditions and circumsfcauces of trade in' New Zealand did not justify the measure and if the bill became law in its entirety it wovld affect persons arid trades in New Zealand in a manner not, contemplated by the framer.
The Traders and Employers' Assooiation and the Chamber of Commerce, New Plymouth, wrote requesting the co-operation oE the Chamber iv obtaining :—(1) A train from Napier to connect with the Wellington, and New Plymouth express at Palmerston daily and vice versa if practicable, in order to get; direct daily communication from Napier to Auckland. (2) The acceleration of the morning train from Wangarrai, which now only reaches New Plymouth at 8.45 p.m. (3) Starting the first:train from flawera an hoar earlier, say, at 630 a.m., so as to arrive in New Plymouth not later than 10 u.rn; —Action was deferred in the meantime.
