Sale of Work.
The sale of work in connection with the Congregational Church was opened last night by His Worship the Mayor at 7.30 p.m. in the Lyceum Theatre.. In his opening remarks the Mayor stated that the Church had been built at a cost 'of -61450 four years ago next January, and there was still a debt of £515 owing on it. The sum of £140 had been raised last year and he felt confident that £60 w-ould be realised during the present sale of work. The people, he said, who were present, and all who had in any way assisted at the present bazaar deserved great credit for the liberal manner in which they had responded to the Rev. S. Baker's appeal, which was proof conclusive of the influence he had over his congregation and the esteem in which he was held. He aptly compared the workers with gold miners who dug only in auriferous soil, and said they also were digging in a rich and prosperous district. He thought that the ladies had done exceedingly well and with best wishes for its success declared the bazaar open.
Towards nine o'clock the theatre was crowded and presented a most animated appearance, while business appeared to be brisk. The various stalls looked exceedingly attractive and the different articles were displayed in a manner at once tasteful and particularly tempting to purchasers, while a practically unlimited supply of tea and light refreshments was provided in the tea room, which was very much appreciated by both young and old.
The weighing and gripping machines were also a feature of the evening, attracting considerable attention, while the fish-pond was also a source of amusement. Musical items were contributed during the evening by Master A. and Miss L. Gelhor, ..Inch were very much appreciated.
