CHEISTCHUECH, October 3. A fire occurred this afternoon in an old ten-roomed house, owned and occupied by William Woolley. The greater pare of the building was uninjured by the fire, which originated in the back of the house, probably through a defective chimney. The building was insured for £250.
Private letters received here from A. Shrubb, the English distance runner, state his willingness to come- to New Zealand this season and compete under the auspices of the N9w Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. A special meeting of the council will be held on Friday afternoon to deal with the matter.
NELSON, Oct. 3. At the Harbour Board meeting to-day Captain H.Collins was appointed harbourmaster and pilot; At a. citizens' maeting to-night arrangements were made tor according a public reception to the rifle champion and Sergeant Iryme on their return from Bisiey.
A proposal to celebrate the centenary of Trafalgar, in October next year, has been-taken up warmly, and .a jubilee public gathering is to be held on the 21st.
