P.N. Bowling Club.

The "annual meeting of the P.N/, Bowling Club was held last night. There was a very good attendance and the President, Mr M. Cohen, presided.

In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the Chairman said that a perusal of both could not fail to afford pleasure as to the result of last year's play, which had been extremely satisfactory, the Club; haying, in every way, iustified its high reputation. The results before them showed that their success in other departments of the game were /equally successful and lasting. He understood tbat the year just pass«d, if not a record, had been of a very gratifying nature to the Club and to. those to whom they owed a certain amount of' deference, the Palmerston North Bowling Company. They understood that all the. funds available were paid to the company to be expended by them as they desired. It happened that .their desires nearly always took the form of developing the Club's grounds The company this year was paid £41 as against \£26 last year. In addition there was a sum of £17 still outstanding on the balance-sheet, though of that sum £6 had since been collected. The balance could be set down as good. In conclusion Mr Cohen referred, with pleasure,^ to the great help contributed by the ladies during the year. The motion was seconded by Mr Haydon and carried without .further discussion.

The election of officers resulted as follows :—President, Mr H. Haydon ; Vice-Presidents, Messrs J. O. Batehelar and Jas. Youde;; General Committee: Messrs Cohen, Simmons, A. Jack, Beck, and N. H. Nash; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr J. A. JNashAuditor, Mr G. W. Eavenhill; Match Committee: Messrs' A. Jack, Buntine and N. 11. Nasb.

Mr Haydon was congratulated by Mr Cohen on his election to office. Responding, Mr Haydon said he appreciated the honour very much indeed. He was particularly pleased to see that he had been elected without opposition, because he thought election to such an office should 'be as unanimous as possible. As far as he was personally con. cerned they had a president who was very fond of the game and who would do his best to extend the game in the town- One good thing about the green was, he said, that when people came there they were able to leave all their troubles behind them. They did have trouble, occasionally, in the Borough Council, but on the green they left everything behind them. He also paid a high tribute of praise to the ladies, whom he described as one of the features of the club, and not only assisted the club but illuminated the green by their presence. They were a great incentive to young men to play, and he hoped to see them as often as they could and they would be treated with every courtesy. (Hear, hear.) Mr J. A. Nash, in acknowledging his re-election, thanked the past officers of | the club for their assistance during the year.

It was decided on Mr Beck's motion, seconded by Mr Swallow, that the club should present a pair of Bilver-mounted bowla for competition among the colts with a view of enoouraging the younger players.

Mr 3 . A. Nash moved that no member be allowed to play in any'matches unless his bowls were tested as required by the Northern Bowling Assooiatioa roles. He said members, continued to play with straight bowla and pointed out that Messrs Alcock and Co. had been appointed offioial testers for affiliated clubs, and it w»b now time to say that any member, playing in club matches with bowls not tested, should be disqualified for the match.

Mr Jaok thought tho club should make a protest against the way in whioh bowls were tested. He thought they were net done in a proper manner, one certainly not creditable to the firm. He considered that before the motion was oarriea a protest should ba worded against the method employed to test.

Mr F. W. Bunting endorsed Mr Jack's remarks, aod described the testing lbst year as a farce.

Mr Swallow said he had sent hh bowls to be tested and they came back stamped, but, otherwise the same as when they were sent to Messrs Alcock and Co. He also thought that the Club fihould have all bowls presented for competition tested before they were awarded. -

Replying, Mr J. A. Nash said that he had interviewed the official tester and he had said that if Mr Jack would take his bowls to him he would test them and guarantee the bowls would all take the desired bias when finished with. He suggested Mr Jack should do this; the bowls could then be tested on the green and action determined on the result.

Mr Jaok agreed to the suggestion, whioh was approved by other members and the motion was then cirried.

It wbb decided on Mr N.H. Nash's suggestion that it be a recommendation to the general committee to elect Mr A. Drew a life member of the Club.

Mr J. A. Nash, seoretary, was voted the usual honorarium of £7 7s.

It was decided to open the green on October 19th.

Invitations were received from tho Marton and Feilding clubs to be present at the opening of the respective greens. Mr Cohen, referring to the very excellent work done by ,Mr J. A. Nash ass secretary of the dab. said, the whole of the executive work fell upon him and that he did it well was shown by his reelection to the office year after year. He would make a very worthy President, no doubt, but he was required as secretary. The office of President, Mr, Cohen said, was entirely ornamental, and he hoped Mr Nash would bo available as seoretary for many years to come. Mr Cohen, referring to the many trophies won by Mr Naßh, said he hoped he had room for one more and then handed him a very handsome gold medal on behalf of members, which he trusted he would receive in the same spirit of esteem and regard in which it was offered. He had earned the medal and very much more by his work, but they did not expect him to accept it as a reward for duties done, but simply as a token of regard. Replying Mr Nash said his work wns a labour of love, and if he had not liked the game, probably, they would not have found him there. When he took office the club had a membership of 40 ; it was now 100, and was one of the best clubs affiliated with the Association. He was proud of the fact that since the Association had been formed the Club had won three championships and he thought members also should be proud. Proceeding he explained the object of forming the newly established Brache Oak Club in town, details of

which/have been already'■'jmbHsh'ed'- in the Stasdaed, and concluded by saying he would prize the medal very much. It made one think that all labour had hot been lost and that he had done the right thing in the interest of the Cliib."

The following new members were elected :—Messrs H Vivian, E. Nash, S. Thacker, C, Pickering. J. Di Smith, Woodard,.D. Munro; W. JEL Maclean, S. Hume, and E Pegler. It was decided to extend the congratulations of the Club to-the Brache Oak Club and the meeting terminated.
