Improved Demand for Mutton.

The Department of Industries ami Commerce has received the' following cablegram from the Agent-General, dated London Ist:—- '

There has been a better tone in the mutton market this week, the average price for Canterbury mutton being 4|d for light weights and 4d for heavy weights; Dunedin, Southland anS W.M.E. Co. mutton, 4^d, nominal; other North Island mutton, 4d, firm.

There has been no alteration in tho lamb market sinee_ last week.

The beef market is depressed owing to the large supplies coming forward. The average price to-day for hindquarters oi! New Zealand beef is 3M; forequarters, 2-i-d, nominal. ' ; >"

The butter market is steady. The average price of choicest New Zealand butter (stored) is- 99s per cwt»; ne%v make, Australian, to-day is quoted at 112s; Danish, 120s.

There is no alteration in the cheesemarket since last week.

The hemp market as firm,, and good business has been done for October shipments. The price, of New •" Zealand! hemp, good fair 'Wellington grade, on spot to-day per ton is £30, and for Manila hemp, fair current grade, on sect, £37.

There is no alteration in the cocksfoot seed market since last week.
