Intense Suffering in the Town

LONDON, Oct. 2,

Chefoo reports that the Golden Hill forts are almost destroyed by shells, the Japanese efforts being concentrated on this position.

The Bogatyr and two destroyers have just returned, to Vladivostok after a short_ cruise. The Ros.sia and Gromoboi remain in their battered condition caused by the fight with Admiral Kamimura.

. It is reported af St. Petersburg that Admiral Wirenius' short sortie was to ascertain the value of the recently repaired vessels at Port Arthur. Another view is that the increased hail of projectiles in.the harbour owing to Japanese recent successes, is compelling the ships to move.

A junk which ran the Port Arthur blockade reports intense suffering in the town through lack of water. .". •

LONDON, Oct. 2. German warships are cruising outside of Kaiochau. In the event of the Port Arthur 'ships attempting to reach Kiaochau they will be examined on the high seas and if- seaworthy they will be advised not to enter the port. Two bands of Chunehuses, each 1500 men, aire making particularly daring attacks on the Russian railway communication.
