Maoris on the Spree.

Riotous Behaviour.

A Constable Roughly Handled

(By Telegraph.) (Special to Standard)

TE PUKE, This day. Just after dark last night a number of Maoris, who had been drinking, became rather boisterous. Constable Stackpoole warned them to disperse, and cease their riotous behaviour, but all to no purpose, and in trying to arrest the worst he' was severely handled. They got the constable down and it is a wonder that he managed to reach the inside of-thehotel alive. By this time a number of Europeans arrived on the scene, and, after attending to Stackpoole's injuries, emerged out into the: night,, headed by the constable, rushed the natives, secured the ringleader and landed him under lock and key after a tough struggle. The others then cleared out' to their homes., A number of other an-ests are expected to-day. Constable Stackpoole is terribly knocked about the body and face.- All credit is due to the manner hi which ho essayed his attempt and secured the native.

LATER,

The native, Rahine King, arrested under difficulties last night, was tried before three J's.P. this morning and, notwithstanding the riotous manner in which he .and others behaved, was fined £1 for being drunk and sentenced to six weeks in Mount Eden gaol for the. assault on the constable. The sentence is looked upon here as being too light when all the circumstances are taken into account. The hotel was practically besieged until the Europeans mustered in force. Other arrests arc impending.
