Palmerston North Bowling Club.

Animal Smoke Concert.

The yearly smoke concert given by the Palmerston North Bowling Club took place in the Fire Brigade Hall last night. The President, Mr M. Cohen, occupied the chair, and there were a large .number of gentlemen present. Apologies/were received from Messrs Bcott, Mowlem and A. D. Thomson for absence. The gathering was marked by the usual spirit of conviviality and goodfollowship which invariably characterises bowlers' social functions.

After the loyal toast, the president proposed " Success to BowliDg," eulogising the game which brought men together and created healthy, goodfellowehip. Mr W. Beck endorsed what Mr Cohen had said in reference to the merits of the game. He referred to the formation of a club on Mr Lissaman's green. The green was not a large one but it was a pretty one, and a spirit of friendly rivalry would be created be^ tween the two clubs by it. It was also an improvement m that .Palmerstcn would now be able to send double teams

to the tournaments.

Mr H". Haydon m proposing ".Kindred Sports" referred to the influence of healthy sport op. the people of a country and instanced the present keenness for sport in the colony as a proof that, it was in a prosperous condition. Messrs Ravenhill, 8. Inder and Rev. J. Young responded to the toast. Mr G. B. Denny, one of the original members of the Palmerston North Bowling Olub, proposed the health of' the Club, which lie hoped would long continue to flourish as it had done in the past. The President replied, suitably acknowledging the toast. The President then presented the trophies won last year. Those who had been fortunate in carrying off prizes, he said, were congratulated by those who were not so fortunate. None envied their success but all hoped they would in the future bring lasting honour to their club. The following is the list :— Championship singles, gold medal presented by the N Z. Times Company. —Mr F. W." Bunting. Senior pairs, gold medals presented by the President and Mr^ W. Beck— Messrs A. Jack and W. Reed.

The rink matches. were not finished last season.

Mr J. A. Nash proposed the health of. " Donors of Prizes," those present replying. - On Mr S. Abraham's intiative, the speedy recovery to health of an enthusiastic member of the club now laid aside by illness (Mr J. 0- Batchelar) was honoured, and it was decided to convey to him the club's sympathy. Mr Haydon, on behalf of the members, presented the President with a gold medal as a slight recognition of the way he had carried .out his duties. Mr Cohen had been approached to allow himself to. be nominated again for the office, but had declined, as he considered tbe Presidentship should be a "going-round" position.

Mr Cohen expressed his thanks to the members.-

Mr Jack proposed success to the newly-formed Briche Oak Club, Mr Lissaman replying. . "Our indefatigable secretary," was proposed by. Mr Haj don, Mr >Nash in replying stating he considered it. an .honour to belong to'a club with such a record bs the Palmerston Olub.

Mr W. Reßd proposed the toast of the press and Mr Abrahams "The Ladies," the latter being replied to by Mr Wilson. ' '
