Borough Council.
The adjourned meeting of theßorbugh Council was held la-,t night;: '■ Present— The Mayor,- and Grs Tolley, .Jack; Browning, Essex, Goodger, France and Haydon,
An apology was received from Cr Holben. . '
ESPOETS,
Mr Xnowles, Inspector, reported upon steps taken by him relative to the trimming of trees and hedges m the town. Cr Essex considered that the bye-laws should be more effectively enforced and he quoted, instances of hedges .not trimmed that he had noticed in the town himself, mentioning; several hedges m particular.
The report was adopted. . The Engineer reported having in-, spected the new streets named Eanfurly, Eolleston, Ada, and Graham, off Ferguson-street and College-street, with ' the following result:—The roadway was opened jit fourteen places and the average, thickness of metal was as follows:—At the centre 6i inches and at the haunch 5£ inches. The Council's conditions require that the metal shall be 9 inches at, the centre portion and 6 inches at the sides. It will, therefore, be seen that at the sides the required thickness is closely approached, whilst there is a want at the centre, but, as these roads have been open for traffic since about January or February last, it is quite probable that the required thickness tat the centre was provided when thfe streets were constructed. With regard to the cross section of the streets, the plans show a camber or crown of 18 inches whilst the streets at present have a. camber averaging 19 I inches, which shows that a little too much has been allowed for settlement. The footways in Eanfurly, Bolleston, and Ada streets will require to be retarred, and m Graham-street to be top dressed and repairsd near the kerbs, this work I estimate to cost as under: Ec-tarring paths Eanfurly-street, £66; re-tarriDg paths, Eolleston-street, €24 ; re-tarring paths Ada street, £22; retarring paths Graham-street, £24 ' A conversational discussion followed the engineer's report principally with regard to the present state of the streets mentioned, and the quantity of metal now upon them. Eventually Cr Tolley moved that the streets mentioned m the report be taken over on payment of the sums mentioned in the" report as beiDg necessary to put them into proper repair. Further discussion followed, and tbe motion was altered till it was ■not recognisable from the' original one It was then withdrawn in' favour, of a further report by the, engineer upon the cost of doing necessary work in the streets. attended to". The report was adopted, and the following motion by Cr Essex tarried—"That the Council inform the owners of the new streets, that the latter will be taken over upon sums of money being" deposited with the Council as followi :—Eanfurly-st., £88 8s; Eoileston-st., £39 3s; Ada-st. £29 9 a 6d ; Graham-st., £39 19s.
