NEW PLYMOUTH, September 26. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to-night, to.consider the Trades Monopolies Prevention Bill, the following resolution was passed—" That this chamber is of opinion that although in many instances .combines and trades' associations--may result in no disadvantage to the public, the tendency toward monopolies in the article's mentioned in the.Bill is a menace to legitimate trade such as to compel the ? Government to frame laws to prevent abuses jn this direction; but that the chamber is strongly opposed to the provisions of the 1-rade Monopolies Prevention Act, 1904, in its present state, as being too drastic and irritating, and likely to do barm by preventing useful legislation, lne chamber suggests that a commiss.ipn be appointed to'take evidence, and report generally on the subject of " injurious monopolies," and the best way of preventing them,'as with full information, legislation is more likely to be satisfactory than if enacted hurriedly and without sufficient data. On the subject of through connection between Auckland and Dunedin, a motion was carried affirming the great importance of the mail train connecting with the steamer at Wellington, so that tbe latter can catch the train at Lyttelton next morning for Dunedin, so making a through connection without unnecessary delay. .
