The Carterton Show.
The Wairarapa and East Coast. Pa?<v toral and Agricultural Association hold their annual show at Carterton on October 26 and 27. The improvements which were commenced in 1903 are being continued this-year, the new work including ,a tea room 40 x 40, built on the bungalow style at a cost of £130, and twentyfive and forty (covered) horse and cattle stalls, respectively, and sixty new dogkennels 'are also, being built. The total cost of these works" runs 'to about £500.'' When completed the buildings and yards ■ wfil'ruh right round the outside^area of the? 15; acres which comprise the show grounds'.? The total value of the buildings and. yards; maybe set down at a little over £3000—a striking contrast with the small cost of the meagre edifices which did duty when the Society was young." Still it must be admitted that these old time buildings did good service. The society however can now. seat 2000 spectators in its grandstands. There is accommodation for 100 horses and 100 cattle in covered stalls, 200 cattle and 500 sheep in pens, 300 head of poultry, 60 dogs, and a fine agricultural hall is capable of holding' 500 tons of produce.,.- The grounds are in Carterton, being near the railway station. The society has just issued its programme for the forthcoming show Amongst the prizes, total value £950, are the Challenge Cup,' valued at £20, and presented by Mr D. E. Bidwillfor the best hack in tne show, to be competed for by winners in 11, 13 and 15 stone hack, and lady's hack classes ; i £35 in leaping- matches, and £13 m j mounted infantry competitions. The prizes for estimating the dead weights 'of live cattle, sheep and pigs amount to |:£33 Bs. The society offers fifteen gohl aiid eleven silver medals for champions; ! in addition to.prize money.? -Ehtries^are Ito close oh Saturdays October 15. . .?
