■WELLINGTON, September 25. A Taihape bushman named J. Banfield came to' town with cheques amounting to JE6S,:.which he cashed. The banker noted the numbers of the fivers. A suspected man subsequently handed what he believed to be three single notes to a friend to pay a debt on bis bebaU. After the man's departure it Was di:covorod that one of the supposed singles was a fiver bearing one oE the noted numbers. Alfred Wardle, a returned trooper of the (Seventh Contingenti, was arrested to-day aa the man from whom the notes were received.
CHKESTCHUKCH, September 25. A fire io "Whitcombe and Tombs' premises destroyed practically all the electrotyping machinery. The total damage will run into many thousands. The insurances on tho stock, plant, and buildings affected amounts to £17,050 DUNEDIN, September'2s. A cottage in : Cumherland-atreet, owned by Miss Eobb, was with its contents destroyed by fire tins morning.
