Woodvilleis the happy hunting ground of all the broken, down Thespians in New Zealand, who periodically form companies and visit that' town, leaving before daylight next morning. .They have apparently been ■in the habit of regarding the local newspaper as a benevolent society as'they; have, not thought it necessary to jpay their bills before leaving.,. In a recent • issue the Examiner pours out its wrath upon the theatrical profession. Our "contemporary says:—" In-future all printing and advertising must be paid for in advance. We shall make no exception to this rule,' not even- if Paderewski himself comes along. Our last experience has taught us a lesson. We newspaper people have many strange accusations brought against us. One person .whom we found it necessary to take proceedings against, owing to the utter impudence of the reply we received to our request for a 'settlement, supplemented the insolence Iby stating • that we had used four complimentary tickets valued at five shillings each which would more than meet the amount of ouiv account. Now, this was incorrect .in the first place, and we doubt very much if the whole entertainment was worth twenty .shillings. In any case we allowed sufficient from the account to pay for half a dozen tickets to the show. People sometimes make.sneering remarks about newspaper' people always turning out in force to entertainments because -they get in free, but could those people ;look. behind the; scenes they would frequently see that we have more'often than not to pay very dearly for the privilege of seeing David" Doldrum in ' his Dying Duck Dance or Penelope Pompadour playing pianoforte pieces." ; '■.".•''.'■ -■'-.■■
