The Ashhurst District.
(To the' Editor)
Sih.—l notice in the votes of your Ashhurst correspondent a statement to this effect:—"lt has been mentioned that the making of' Grove road will divert trade from Ashhurst. But when, and wherefrom, is a mystery requirinV a lump Of explanation."?'. ?I quite agree with your- correspondent. It needs a bigger "lump " of explanation than the fact that the making of the Grove-road will make "a straight-run' from Palmerston into Hiwinui, Watershed road and back country, enabling settlers froiu .those districts to.' go to Palmerston without-passing through*;Aslihiirst; it will bringthe'people of those districts miles nearer to Palmerston, and will also facilitate the running of the carts of the Palmerston business ?men .into those'parts;'■■'-' • ■', •'.• •-'■".'■'"
I also think the numerous population, the exceptionally heavy traffic, and the almost impassable state of the back streets of Ashhurst, fully warrants the expenditure of over £600 in Ashhurst township. .. : :: -:
When the Joan is .carried, and the streets, and footpath are formed,.! think, Sir, it would be' advisable to take the ranger off the roads, to save the footpaths being overrun 'with'grass and weeds, which .would.also do away with the necessity of the expenditure of £20 for the formation of the road from Hanlon's stables to the public pound, that such constant and excessive traffic now demands. Ashhurst ratepayers who do .not, vote for the proposed loan are, I think, Sir, blind to the best interests of their town.; There will be a matter of a few hundreds of pounds spent in Ashhurst for the time being, which? ratepayers in Ashhurst will have the privilege of paying £42 a year for.—l am, etc ,• a.
