General News.

A dread rumor (says the Ladies' Pictorial) is afloat that that fearful Victorian atrocity the chignon is on the eve of revival. Its recall has doubtless been suggested by the hairnet, which m so very pretty a form has been largely adopted this season.

Should solicitors smile? The point cropped up m the Christchurch Magistrate's Court the other moraine, during a case in which Mr Donneliy and Mr Stringer were opposed. The former was holding forth eloquently, and during his effort the Crown Prosecutor kept up a chuckle of amusement., This incensed Mr Donnelly, who -declared warmly that "this was no laughing matter; sir," and muttered something about what would happen if the. offending solicitor so misconducted himself somewhere else, and on some occasion—it was not quiteclear where or when he referred to. At this even the stern Magisterial features relaxed into a genial smile. *• Are you referring to the great Day of Judgment or the Supreme Court?" queried Mr Haselden. This turned away the wrath of the offending counsel for a time, but ere long the irritating smile broke out again, and again Mr Donnelly remonstrated with his "learned friend." "But surely we are not to be prevented from smiling now and again," protested Mr Stringer, "why, even his Worship smiles occasionally?" "Oh, you think you can smile becauseyou are appearing for a rich company, and I only for a poor barman,", retorted Mr Donnelly, to the amusement of the Court.
