Ayrshire Cattle.
Mr Luxford's Herd.
Mr S. W. Luxford, of Awapuni, has recently made-considerable.additions tohis purebred"Ayrshire herd| this'! course: being- necessary, owing-'to the keen demand for his stock in all"parts of the colony. To the 70 breeding cows which previously constituted Ms herd, Mr Luxford has added fifteen other animals from the South Island, some of which are in calf, to Southern bulls. Amongst the best of the recently purchased animals we might mention Daisy, by Sir Robert, dam Beauty; Lily, by Sir Robert, dam Ruth; yearling heifer Lucy, by Sir Redvers Buller, •dam Logan 11, by Sir Patrick; Ruby,; a three-year-old heifer, by Duke of York, dam.Rubina; Flora 111, by Marquis of Lome, by White Prince (imp), dam Flora 11. Flora 111 was first at Palmerston South, and second at Oamaru and second at Waitati last year. Violet, by Sir Patrick, also a prizetaker last year, has thrown a calf to King Edward since her arrival here. Nancy Lee, a two-year-old, was another prize-winner in the South Island last year. Lilywhite 11, by Prince Charles, a three-year-old; two heifers, Spot, by Sir Douglas, and McGregor's Ruby, by Sir Dougald, dam Gladys. Lilywhite 11, obtained first prize as the best heifer in milk at Oamaru last year. Nobby, a.. seyen : year-old cow by Sir Patrick, out of an Ayrshire Prince cow, ■is amongst the- number: Three 'fine young bulls^General - Gordon, by. Sir Hector, dam Lucy; another, 'Sir. Hector —Douglas, '.out of : Favourite. ;•. andi a. two-year-old McGregor,: by The Baron, dam Bell—Prince of Wales, have also been purchased. These animals arrived last week and are all doing well in thennew home. In the course of his enquiries, Mr Luxford found that very few Ayrshires were available in the North Island and that in the South Island the price had risen about 50 per cent, since he last visited there. This was due, he thought, to the fact that the Australians were re-stocking after, the recent drought and were drawing on New Zealand. Mr Luxford will enter several of his acquisitions for the spring show.
