(Per Press Association). SYDNEY, September 19. _ The first rounds of th« tennis championship commenced to - day. The weather was very hot, a high wind prevailing for the greater part of the day. Local play was below par, but the' New Zealanders, with the strain of the inter-State toarnament off their minds, played in various rounds with great freedom.
In the Doubles, Lai&hley and Gore beat Eico and Gaden 6—2, 4—6, 6—4. 6—2. Dou9t and Pockley beat Swanston and Cox 6—l, 6—2, 6—2.
In the Mixed Doubles, Parker and Miss Breamer beat Doust and Miss Lee 6-3,10—8.
