The "Rugby Rough."
A " Willing Gaiue.
Two Players Exchange Blows.
The Referee Assaulted.
(From our own Co-respondent.), The match for the Mayor's Cup between Kiwi and Awahbu. which had excited a great deal of interest locally, was played on Saturday. : A certain amount of dissension ..between the interested parties had been caused by the appointment of an outside referee. Kiwi favoured his appointment, but Awahou opposed it on the grounds of irregularity of appointment. Finally Mr Frew agreed to act. The game was of the willing and keen order, rather too much spirit, if anything, being introduced into the game. In the first spell F. Robinson, for Awahou, placed a beautiful' penalty goal from the touchline. This was the only score during the game, Awahou thus winningby 3, to nil. In the second spell a regrettable display of bad temper on the part of two individuals marred the game. Blows were exchanged between the parties, and on the referee ordering both off, the Kiwi man struck the referee.
_ The Union met in the evening to consider the referee's report on the matter, when both players were suspended till the end ..of the season, a sentence altogether too lenient to meet the case, and doubly so in the case of the player who struck the referee. Such an offence is unpardonable, and the officials of the Union cannot properly realise their duty in imposing such a light penalty. Both men meet with the same treatment although "one, besides committing a breach on the field of play, doubled his offence by assaulting the referee. As the season is practically at an end, it means simply suspension for a couple of playing Saturdays. The Union was formed for the purpose of putting down with a firm hand any attempts at black-guardism,-and. it must be said that the management has failed dismally in its efforts. After., yesterday's display it would be advantageous if 'the Mayor withdrew-the cup from competition, as it is certain that the games as at present played and managed are not in the best interests of football or the town Generally. ■ ■
The Foxton school boys journeyed toN Palrnerston on Saturday and played a game of football against the Campbellstreet school, and, although defeated by 8 to nil,''thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They all speak in high terms of the treatment they received at the hands of the Campbell-street boys. Last week Inspectors Gray and Strpng examined the local school. Eleven pro-, ficiency and one'competency certificates were gained in Standard VI. out of. fourteen presented. The Inspectors presented a very flattering report on the progress and efficiency of the school and Mr Stewart and staff have every reason to be proud of it. . ;,
. On Thursday the Speedwell, Mr Jupp's launch, left for Hickson and Reeves' .Oroua Bridge mill, carrying, amongst other things; large quantities of bread and butter for the men at the mill.- On. Satiu-day morning she had- not arrived and nothing had- been heard of her. The men at the mill had run out. of bread and butter and have had to do without these necessaries for some days. Later advices .. showed that a huge log-has impeded her progress and she is not able to proceed • until the obstacle is removed.. ' ■■■
