Mr and Mrs T. E. Taylor (writes a London correspondent) came from Australia by the North German Lloyd steamer Bremen to Naples, where they landed and started on n tour of the chief Italian cities and Switzerland, then crossed France westward to Paris, and came through to London. Their present intention is to remain iv England unt:l the first week in July, returning then to New Zealand by the route by which they came.

The College-street School Committee are to bo congratulated upon acquiescing in the appointment of Miss Barry as assistant mistress of the primary school in succession to Miss Innos. Miss Barry has been a resident of Palmerston for, some years, having resigned an important scholastic appointment- in Auckland to join her relations here. Miss Barry has dono a considerable amount of relieving work in this education district, and has accomplished good work in every case, but this is her first permanent appointment. Miss Barry's influenco for good on her pupils has always ueen particularly well marker!, and she should prove a worthy successor of Miss limes.
Au inquest was held at the Hospital yesterday, before Capf. Mowleui, District Coroner, into the circumstances surrounding the death o£ a little boy named Conrad Dernier, who was admitted to the institution suffering from injuries inflicted by a gas eni'ine. The following jury was einpaiir.cllcd :—Messrs Goo Holland (foreman), "W. Ryan, D. Charter, Jus. Donaldson, A. Goldfinch, and "\V. Sutlierland. Evidence was given by the boy's father and by Dr Macl intire, the'latter attributing death to fracture of the base of the skull, and a I verdict was returned in accordance with the medical evidence. The jury visited the premises where the accident occurred and inspected the engine at work, and after doing so added the following rider : "That notwithstanding the certificate issued by the Inspector of Machinery we do not consider the machinery is perfectly protected to ensure immunity from accident, and would strongly recommend that the projecting shaft be either removed or securely boied in."
