The Commonwealth.

(By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Press Association.) Received June 11, at 9 49 a.m.

iIELiiorRXK, Wednesday. Ihe Senate has placed straw on the free list and reduced the duty on oilmen's stores to fifteen per cent. An amendment to reduce starch was lost, the voting being equal. In the House, Sir George Turner said the financial position of the States and prospective falling off in revenue made it absolutely impossible to avoid borrowing to construct necessary works. He proposed to establish a sinking f un( j 0 £ two per cent, in connection with t"Eto loans. This will wipe out each loan in 37 years. He estimated the Commonwealth would have to borrow half a million yearly for a few years for necessary works.

Ihe House rejected the item £300 to pay the expenses of a Coronation church service in Melbourne. The feeling >vas strongly _ against subsidising churches and causing possible irritation amongst religious bodies.
