Sergeant James Rogors (now Lieutenant) a member of the First Victorian Contingent has been granted the. Victoria Close. Service papers t) hand contain the following gratifying anannoiiDceinent: — " Tho Kii^g lms signified his intention to bestow tho Victoria Cross on Sergcpnt James Rogors, of tho South African Constabulary. On 15th Juno, l'JOl, during a skermish near Thabanchu, a party of tlio rw.rguard of Captain Sitwell's column, consisting of Lioutenant F. DickinsoD, Sergeant James Rogers and cix men of tiio South African Constabulnry, was suddenly attacked by about 60 Boers. Lieutenant Dickinson's horse having been shot, that officer was compelled to follow his men on foot. Sergeant Rogors, soeing this, rode back, tiring as ho did so, took Lieutenant Dickinson up behind him, and carried him for halt a mile on his horso. The Sergeant then returned to within 400 yards of the enemy, and carried away, (.no after tho other, two men who had lost their horses, after which ho caught the horses of two other men ami helped tho men to mount. All this was done under a very heavy riile liro, Tho Boers wero near enough to Sergeant Rogers to call upon him to surrondcr ; lub only answer was to continuo firing."
