To tho average man tho Arctic region is one vast unexplored field of ice and snow-capped hills. Those who know it, however, aie aware that iis mineral resources are enormous. A discovery has been inado which promises enormous wealth. Some years ngo a Dundoe whaling syndicate acquired a. concession of a tract of land from the Canadian Government for tho devoloptnem of the industry in which they wore cmgugeJ, In tho spring of last year an Eskimo woman wandered into tho settlement and displayed a bag containing a number of small red stones. According to her statement she had come into possession of tho gjuis at somo indefinite point across country, where a great rock exists—which she described minutely. Unfortunately, tho season was too far advanced to permit, of further investigation being mado, but for a consideration tho Eskimo was induced to part with (ho treasure-, Tho stones were brought home to Dundeef and thence despatched to a London specialist, who pronounced them amethysts o! singular chastity. Cut and polished, tho stones, which aro in the hands of Dundee gentlemen, aro of great value. A special expedition is now being sent out. It is hoped tho Eskimo woman will bo found, auct by her guidance it is hoped the great niuiintain of . amethyst will bo ro discovered.
