Oroua River.
At the meeting of the Kairanga County Council tq-daj, Mr.l. E. Fulton, in a repert dealing with the encroachment of the Oroua river ar Awahuri, stated that as the Boa: ' juld require <.n economical scheme and one protectin<r the bridge approaches, lie had prepared one accordingly. The river was cutting away ils south, bank at a point about 30 chains above tho bridge, and it is from there deflected across the river bed against tho northern bed. Ho did not propose to build any protoetiye works at the point above the bridge as the river lrotild soon cut through a low point of laud there and in that way would improve its course and relieve the bank on the northern side. He therefore thouyht the only works now required to protect the bridge should bo built points indicated by lUr Fulton on the plan. _ More elaborate works could be built with iron or timber piles, but he thought these were unnecessary^ ITe suggested (hut fascines made of long continuous rolls of sei'ub four to six feet in diameter be built on the bank and rolled into the river, one on (op of flic other. They should be weighted down with stones and wire. A bend nf the Olutha River had been protected with sheaves of straw, weighted and pressed down inside wire bindings This an^vered ils purpose- noil temporarily. An .•ssenliapart of Ih,' protective works would be fencing to keep stock from tho fascines. He estimated She co?t of flu- work at £10 per chain i'.vr lo chains. A conference of delegates H-oni adjacent local bodies, inclu ling the Uorou-'ii Council was held at the County Council's o(li.;e this afternoon to discuss tiio question in all its bearings.
