MONDAY, JUNE 9, 1902. TIME'S REVENGES.
In* 1899, in the course of"a question in (ho House of Representatives, the member for Palmerston asked the Minister of Lands if the land purchased from Mr Joseph. Saunders under the Lands for Settlement Act was not liable to flood from the Oroua River, with the result that expensive protection works would have to bo constructed. The Hon. W. Hall-Joucs, who was (hen acting as Minister of Lands, replied in rather a light and airy fashion, and said that ''the department was advised by Mr McKerrow that tho land purchased by tho Government was perfectly free from Hoods, and no expenditure on protection works would be required." He said ho thought it as well this should be stated soastoromore auy erroneous impression or rumor in connection with tho acquisition of tho land. It is evident that neither Mr HalUJones or Mr McKerrow knew everything, because although three years have elapsed without an abnormal flood, tho Government are considering the best means to adopt to protect some of tho land from river encroachment.
