Oroua River.

In view of tho general interest taken in the threatened inroads of the Oroua river at Awahuri nnd Morrison's, the following letter, addressed to the ActingPremier, by the Hon. W. W. Johnston and Mr L. R. Bryant, elmirmen of tho Aoraugi and Manawatu Drainage Boards respectively, will prove interesting to settlers whose properties abut on the river at tiie threatened points-.—".The condition of (he Oroiu river is becoming so serious and menacing that we feel justified in asking you to authorise one of your engineers to be associated -with our engineer ia making a joint report thereon. Owing to the'inability of the lower section of the river to carry the amount of flood water brought clown, consequent on the denudation of the upper lands of timber accentuating the off flow of rainfall therefrom, tho matter held in suspense or otherwise earned down is deposited, causing the bed of the river to rise so rapidly that unless efficiently dealt with must produce a serious catastrophe, a position the scope of our Boards is imequal_ to meet. We, therefore, feel justified 111 soliciting your assistance in the direction suggested." At the meeting ot the Manawalu Drainage Board to-day the action of the Chairman was endorsed, though at the same time it was pointed out that at both places the property belonged to fho Government. The Acting-Premier has, as already stated in the Siakdaed, recognised the gravity of the position and agreed to a Government Engineer trarorsing the course of tho rivor and preparing a ropor thereon,
