MANAWATU EVENING STANDARD AND POHANGINA GAZETTE GUARANTEED LARGEST CIRCULATION IN THE DISTRICT. TUESDAY, JUNE 5, 1900. CABLE REPAIRING.
With chat ingate modesty which seems to affect the Press of the colony when the doings of the Premier are concerned, there has been no reference to the scandalous state of affairs now prevalent in connection with the interprovincial cable service between Wellington and Marlborough. It was announced the other day that one of the cables across the straits had parted, but for fear any public attention should be attracted to the state of affairs, this was followed by the assurance that no inconvenience would be occasioned as the other cables would carry the work. This was, of course, prompted by the recollection that the only cable-repairing steamer in the colonies, the Tufcanekai, has been commandeered by the Premier and a host of friends for a month's jollification at the expense of the taxpayers of the colony. Probably the remaining cables may be sufficient for tho work just now, but the Parliamentary session is approaching, when the work is trebled, aud if another cable were to part, there would be a nice kettle of fish. Of course, the Premier could not have taken the Hinemoa, as the accommodation for the "guests" of the colony would not have been so recherche and the light-house work could not wait, but surely the safety of cable communication is of some importance. From the first we entered our protest against the enormous expense the colony has been put to for the entertainment of the Premier and his friends, and now another reason is patent why this additional burden ' should not have been placed on a longsuffering commnnity.
