A SCENE OF APPALLIN(J m GRANDEUR. SPLENDID STEADINESS Oic^^^^ GRENADIER GUARDS.

London, June 4. Lieut.-General Eundle on the 29th attacked a strong position six miles from Senekal, shelling but failing to silenc* the Boer guns. An attempt made to execute an out-flank movement wa» greatly hampered by immense grass fires.

• The Grenadier Guards showed splendid steadiness through the names and billows of smoke, once changing their position in the face of a hail of bullets in order to ■ escape burning. The battle is described as a scene of appalling grandeur.

The Boers requested the use of the British ambulance. They admitted 30 killed and many wounded.
