MARTON SCHOOL.
Tue bsuiace of tho Marton School Committee in closing the school because, like spoilt children, the Education Board would not pleaso them by increasing their capitation grant OYor that paid to other schools, has proved unavailing, h:j the Chairman of the Education Board has given the headmaster instructions to reopen the school and n»t to close it again, unless with the authority of the Board. There can be no question but that the capitation paid to Educatisn Boards is utterly kuuffi" cient to enabla it to fulfil its functions ia a satisfactory manner, but there is a j constitutional method @f rsmedying that, \ and it is aoS by depriving the children ef j education. If the majority of members j of Parliament were to compel Govern- j naent to increase the capitation, the ■ whole question would be settled without 1 any trouble. Of course, we will be told \ that this takes time, and the answer to ! that is that Marton must do like the \ majority of other Committees in the ' education district—if the capitation is t insufficient, other methods of raising funds must bo resorted to. In Palmer- | sten hundreds of pounds have been i | obtained to maintain the schools, by j the efforts of tlie Committees, and J while we think it is altogether wrong to place such a burden en the parents, we j certainly never dreamt that the remedy was te closg the schools altogether imti* xufi&eient funds were forthcoming from official sources.
