CAPTURE OF JOHANNESBURG.

The news of the capture of the great mining city in the Transvaal by Lord Roberts' forces without a struggle comes as a surprise, although it is another indication of the complete demoralisation of the Boer forces. It was only in 1886 that gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand range of hills, but last year Johannesburg had a population of 100,000, over half of whom were whites debarred from the use of the franchise. The terrible privations most of these uitlanders had to endure, and the damage done to their property by the Boers, makes the fcapture of the city an event of no small importance in the history of tha war.
