(Per Press Association) Marton, May 80. The Marton Committee closed tbe school to-day, owing to its insanitary condition, the Board having refused to provide funds sufficient to pay the caretaker, etc.

, Invercargill, May 29. .:.Tse first sod of the Orepuui-Waiau railway was turned to-day by theHonJ. G. Ward. The line, which will cost £49,000, is thirteen miles long. The present vote is £6000. Twenty men are to be put on the work immediately. Mrs Cassells, the local hotelkeeper, provided a banquet for two hundred at her own cost,
Wellington, May 30. The Municipal Association of New Zealand has sent out a memo to every Borough in the Colony dealing succinctly with the powers of Borough Councils in dealing with nuisances and infection. The S.M. gave judgment to-day in two cases brought against the owners of houses who had resisted condemnation by the Municipal authorities. The condemnation was upheld. Mr Haselden commented on the diversity of opinion among medical men on so simple a subject as the sanitary orinsanitry condition of a building and expressed surprise tha they should be unable to agree.
