COLONEL BROADWOOD.

Colonel Broadwood, the hero of the Roornspruit ambush, is a tall thin man of sinewy figure. His hair is light colored and not particularly luxuriant; his moustache, in fact, is so slight that he looks almost clean-shaven. Besides soldiering, Colonel Broadwood has two hobbles—hordes and riding. Whilst a subaltern in the 12th Lancers—in which regiment he is now a major and brevetcolonel, so he sometimes commands Ins own commanding officer-he joined ' Arthur Yates's stable in a very humble capacity, viz., as a stable boy, and there acquired a thorough practical knowledge of training and stable management. Broadwood has owned racers, amongst which may be mentioned Frigate, an unsuccessful candidate for the Grand National, and the winnername forgotten of the Midnight Steeplechase at Melton Mowbray, which was promoted by ,Lady Augusta Fane.
