Tiritea School Picnic.

There was a very large assemblage of both children and adults on Mr W. S. Stallard's property at Tiritea yesterday, when the annual school picnic was held. The committee—Messrs Stallard (chairman), S. Greer, R. J. Munro, A. Honore, W. Farmer, F. Perry and G. Kendall— and their wives had been at work early and late making preparations for the affair, and several residents who could not spare the time gave donations in kind, and the result was satisfactory to everyone. Refreshments of the most appetising kind, extending over a wide area, drinks, cool and the reverse, nuts, fruit and confectionery were there in plenty and the puzzle was not as to having sufficient, but what to do with what was left after everyone was satisfied. A beautiful spot had been chosen for the function, in a paddock with plenty of green willows,, shade"of a most grateful kind, through which ran the crystal waters of the Tiritea,- which paused in little pools as if knowing that the children would enjoy a paddle in it on such a warm day as yesterday ; while over the road was a level paddock, where rounders, cricket and all sorts of games were played, and the road was utilized for the numerous races. The weather, though warm, was delightful. A pleasant breeze tempered the sun's rays and the ample shelter available rendered the outing a capital one even for those not inclined to violent exercise. Of course to the children the races were the main attraction, and Messrs Fred. Pirani, M.H.R.. (handicapper and starter), Greer, R. J. Munro, G. Kendall, F. Perry, Stallard and Honore, managed close finishes in almost every race which would not discredit an athletic gathering, while the contests were so manoeuvred that every participant won a prize somehow. In the adults' race, Mr S. Greer surprised the knowing ones by winning the cup easily. The ladies who presided over the refreshments were remarkably good in supplying everyone's wants in the shortest time possible, and it would be difficult indeed to» have improved upon them. In the afternoon, Mr Fred. Pirani presented the prizes, and at the request of the committee expressed the general regret at the sad accident which had occurred in the district the previous night, and the sincere sympathy felt by all present with the sufferers and their relatives-.
