Not a Lunatic.
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, July 15. Alunatio named Wm.'Golding was brought before Judge Edwards to-day on an application for his release on the ground that his state of mind does not! require detention. ! Golding was examined in a room of the Court by Drs James and Anson. In answer to the Juc.ge, Dr Hassell, | Superintendent of the Asylum, said he considered Golding was a dangerous lunatic " folding, in his evidence, said in 1895 he received some money from home and was drinking hard for five months, he was in a pitiable state and felt it a relief when he was arrested. Withm a menth he was as well as e7er, and Dr King, the then Superintendent, said he should be released. The reason he was not released was that be saw a patient, Hutoheßon, have medicino forced down his throat and as he died next night he accused the warders of murdering tbp map, He had ever since been kept in a refraotory wa-d. He accused several attendants of brutally illtreating him and other patients, and entered into details. Dr Awon said it was hard to tell the man's real condition from a short exanroalion, but he did not think he would feel justified from what he bad seen and heard, of recommending p" detention. ~_ It was then decided to take Dr. Hassell's evidence first, to give the medical witnesses an opportunity of hesr'ig it.
