THE NEW ZEALAND TEAM IN AUSTRALIA.

There was a magnificent weather nnd a large attend-mce at the match to-day between a team representing the Northern Districts and the New Zealand team. As a display of football the match was H poor one, and for the greater part of ' the time it was too slow to keep the men warm. Allen's fingers were all thumbs, ' and he frequently failed to take the ball. Murray and Handcook played con- ' afefciwiißly, while Smith's running was as brilliant as ever. Roberts played bis i first game in Australia. While his play on the whole was very neat, his passing et times was wild, Stewart, the local tdea had his jaw fractured. The-New Zealanders won the toss, and played with the wind. The locals were very soon on the defensive, and with the exoeption of a few rallies, they spent the greatsr part of their half within their own twenty-five. From a •cram Allen got the ball away to Smith, who, after a dodgy run, passed to Armit, who got across. The angle was a dimcultone, and Wilson failed in the kick at coal. Newcastle then made ft great rush, and Armit saved bis side by kicKing the ball ontof play, After some play in the centre half time was called. On resuming the Beds were again on the defensive. A dribbljngjrush headed by Wilson oarried the ball elose to the local line, and MoKenzie managed to ,Beore," from which Wilson locked a mretty goal. The Northerners next inwaded Now Zealand ground, and looked Mm snoring, bnt Bayly relieved his side by Woking out of play. A capital run by Roberts was nullified by a bad pass, ifcut Smith, with a splendid run, made no for it, scoring a try. Wilson failed £ the kick. The Northerners from the sent the baU behind tho New .Zealand goal. Smith dashed after it, returned, dodged his opponents and ran half way across the ground before he was collared. Brooker sent the ball to Handoook, who scored, Wilson converted the try, with a Wok torn a dilnault angle. When the ball was m play . Main the best run of the day on the doeal side was made by Sharp, who beat ' itho whole of the forward division, and <was only brought to grass by Bayly in itho nick of time. Allen considerably •'■ improved in the last half of the game. The match was late in starting, and the last'2o minutes was practically played by moonlight.
