Fitzherbert Road Board.
A QUESTION OF WAGES. During the reading of the minutes at the Fitzherbert ftoad Board to-day, Warden Lemon stated that he wished his protest entered in the minute book against the increase in wages lately granted to the men in the employ of the Board. He thought that theinorease had been done in an illegal manner, and as the amounts were constantly recurring, notice should have been given at a previous meeting, and the resolution passed at this, He thought that in the present state of the E&ard's finances, the Board should have considered the ratepayers before taking such a step. Var- : den Green coincided in the Dr s. re- ) marks, and stated he made his objection simolv in view of the Board's financial position. He admitted the wges paid, 9s to the overseer, and ,6s 6s to the roadmen, was not excessivebut | stktt he thought that the increase should have been Referred. The Chairman md Warden Coulan spoke in favor oftne increase made, the latter speaking in very forcible terms, stating that a god day's work was expected of the men md , a pauper's wage was paid them. He. challenged the members of the Bard; I who objected to the increase to say tiat ' the wages paid were fair and mprojirI tion to tfw work expected of th«n. Warden Olapperton also objected to my system of " sweating," Tho inmues I were confirmed subject to Dr telnet's protest.
