The Wainui Ashore.
Per Press Association. Wbllinqton, July 18. The Union Company has received advice that the Wainui from Nelson to Wellington went ashore at the French Pasa this morning. The passengers and mails were landed. So far as is known the position is not serious. Later. The Wainui fonled the rooks known as Beef Barrels in the fog last night, and the Captain thought it advisable to beach her. The ICorina, whioh was on the way to Westport, has gone from Nelson to her assistance. Nhmon, July 18. The passengers were supplied with lifebelts. :■■•»., " The boats were slung clear ready for emergenoy. , The vessel was token into shoal water,, near Two Island Point, About two o'clook the Corina came along and all the passengers and mails were transferred to her and brought to Nelson. . The Wainui was making for Waipawa Bav as the tide rose to be beaohed. The Corina returned at once with pumps. &O.i to stand by her. An examination showed about two feet of water in her forehold with an inrush from a hole in her bow, but no water aft. The night was very thick. There were 83 saloon passengers and 2 steerage. The officers and engineers were commended for their conduct.
The following is the list of passengers: —Misses Wither, Satchell, Lyndon, Staples, Smythe, Mesdames Satohell, MoNab, Messrs Wills, Pinkey, Fox, Watkins, MoAlpine, Gilberd, Robinson, Gully, Anstice, Evatt, Stables (2), Bamford, McNab, and the Hon. R. Reeves. The vessel struck three or four times, and then got off, but as she was making water, it was resolved to take her to Walkawa Bay and beach her on Well's land, a sandy strip and well sheltered, but in entering the Bay, the Wainui struck a/ieef which juts out a quarter of amileibrd HoleiuißockPoint. j_ * The, Waibni lies <aat in a darjgeroun position and u sVcahts out nothing can save her, for the water is a Bheer fp.pth of 17 fathoms. When thA ' vessel faral struck excellent order preva ! led amongst the passengers. They were told that the Corinna would-be passing in two hours and they decided to wait for her. ' The acoount of a passenger states that they felt the greatest confidence in Coptain Lambert and the officers. As soon a 8 she struck the Beef Barrells the boats were swung out in readiness, but there was no neoessity to lower them. Latest. The latest wire the Union Co. have received re the Wainui from Capt. Lambert is " Beached Wainui Waikawo Bay, 12 to 14 feet water alongside, leakage fore part, making no water, boat lay alongside and can take all oorgo, think diver could effect temporary repairs."
