The Manawatu-West Coast Railway.
; [Po«f.j The directors of the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company expect to be; able to run right through to Loag■burn junction about the middle of November. Great efforts are being made to complete the works, and the whole of them are m a vary forward state. The Paikakarikt section will not be ready for some months, several of the tunnels being far Irotn completion ; but this fact will not prevent the company from carrying passengers m that ideality. Arrangements are now being made to utilise- the tramway .constructed by the company for ballasting purposes, and* when these are completed the public can travel by rail between Wellington and Paikakariki. A statement having appeared m a country paper to the affect .that the company are treating: with Government for a fast through train to New < Plymouth, accompliahing the journey m one day, we have been requested to say that no negotiations' of the kind have been entered* upon. The company believe they can with safety run trains at 25 or 30 miles an hour, but j it is not at all probable that such a rate will be decided upon for a long time; to come, owing to the great expense which would be entailed. Che section of the company's line between Longburn Junction and Otaki will shortly be -opened for traffic, and arrangements are? being made with the Government to connect their 'trains with ' those of the company. Coaches will continue to run between Otaki and Paikakariki unlill that section of the railway is completed, fn a few days' the public will be able to travel between .Wellington and Paltnerston m seven hours and between Wellington and Wanganni m twelve bourn. Leaving Wellington, they will journey as far as Pukeriia by train, and then go' along the tramway a distance of 3^. loiles,; afterwards^ tak,* <iog coach to Otaki, and travelling from thence to Longburn m the compapy's.j carraiges, completing the journey to ' Wangauui or Piltnereton on the QoTerriment line. When the trains will b* able t* run through from Wellington Jto Longburn the journey to Palinerstnif will only occupy about four hours, and' that to Wangunui will • take eight or nine. ■"'-•' c : - ■ ■ ■ * ■ •--■
