THE TOLL AT THE GORGE BRIDGE.

(TO THE EDITOR DAILY STANDARD.) Sir,?- W« here m Woodville are Bretting up a petition to get the toll at the Gorge Bridge taken off, and we wish you to assist us also m Pahnerston, as it affects you equally as rauch.as us. The toll on this bridge, being under the control of the, General Government, they' c^n remove if they like ; not so the Other at the 'ferry, that we have to put up with, it being under the county and they having leased it. I need not point out to you the different reasons urged for the removal . First, we consider tollgates a relic of a barbarous age, being a clog on the free industries of the ..people. Take this for instance : Now we are drawing ,njiostiy,a]j our supplies from you through •this toll gate ; consequently for all our sfljoirr, tea, and svgar — m fact every tiling w.e eat, potatoes, etc., we have to pay /ejetra for tlftbugh this toll gate. It has therefore a tendency to drive the trade m another direction— Napier w*y. There is no reason why we should not also have' the support of the Wellington' people. I hope you will assist' us, m getting this nuisance removed, and as we are here a law-abiding people we intend to iiae all legitimate means to do so; but I can B»«ure you I have bean m some places ■ where this toll gate would b»vt been found at th« bottom of tyf rivtr b«fort ♦bis,— l am, &q,,
