Conflicting Statements.
(UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION) Auckland, Monday; Captain Cowper, of the Auckland dredge, states that with regard to the two French sailors, of the shipwrecked barque Guichen, he believed they were New Caledonian escapees, as the y had refused to come on board, and declined an offer to be towed to Mackay. He give them bread, but did not know they had no water till after they had left. He did not think the men were m distress, they oast off the boat from the dredge themselves. The crew of the dredge contradict this. They state that the two men were m a sad plight, being' hardly able to move, and told the captain they were shipwrecked sailors nearly perishing. They asked to be taken on board, but the captain refused. They made signs for the captain to hoist the boat on board, or ? to tow it along. One man was crying like a child. Captain Cowper rnmselr let go the painter of the boat, at the game time giving the order to the pilot, " Full speed ahead." Prior to this the castaways asked for bread, and the captain toli Mr Alexander to give them biscuits; this was done, but they were mouldy. They also asked tor water but none was given them.
